The Atlantic Goliath Grouper is a large salt water fish that lives in the Florida Keys, most of the Bahamas, and practically the entire coast of Brazil. Sometimes, they are caught in New England off the coast of Maine and Massachusetts. Atlantic Goliath Groupers can grow up to 4.87 meters (19 feet), and weigh around 790 pounds. With the size and weight of the Goliath Grouper, they will attack an 11 foot lemon shark. They will also attack divers too. They only eat crustaceans, octopi, smaller fish, young sea turtles, small sharks, and barracudas.
This beautiful animal is on the endangered species list. The reason this has happened is because of over fishing. Today, this graceful fish is protected all over the world. The US started protecting them in 1990, and the Caribbean started protecting them three years later, in 1993.
We can keep the Atlantic Goliath Grouper around for many years to come. These amazing fish need to keep their numbers up in South America since this is where they are most populated. We need to try to keep people from taking them from there natural habitat and selling them for money. They are used for food and a delicacy near Brazil.
I want to keep them healthy, so we can see them swimming in the sea for many many years to come.
